From SWLOA Chief Referee: There have been some questions and discussions about enforcing stalling when the ball leaves the box. Here is a clarification. Background: When a team is under a stalling warning, including the automatic warning in the last 2 minutes, Rule 6.11 has these exceptions that allow the ball to leave the attack area without awarding possession to the defensive team: when the ball leaves because of a shot, a pass deflected off the defense, or a deflection off of the defense. The question has been what constitutes a "deflection.".

Interpretation: "Deflection" is to be interpreted broadly, as any contact by the defense that causes the ball to leave the attack area. This includes kicking or redirecting a loose ball. In other words, the ball is awarded to the defense during a stall warning when (a) the ball leaves the box because of an errant pass or ground ball last touched by the offense, or the offensive player carries the ball outside the box, stepping on the line is "outside"
